Overview

A small pendant carved from natural yellow travertine.

Travertine is the stone of Roman baths and Italian piazzas: warm, honey-toned, and pitted with the fine open pores that form as mineral-rich water deposits it over centuries. No two pieces carry the same pattern.

The form here is deliberately plain, so the material does the work. Against white walls or pale timber it reads quiet and warm rather than decorative.

Before You Order

These Are Small

The largest shape is 8.3″ across and the smallest 4.7″. A single one of these will not light a room, and hung alone over a dining table it will look lost.

They are designed as accents, and they work best in groups. Over an island, hang three or more at 24 to 30″ spacing with the bottom of each 30 to 36″ above the worktop. Alone, use one over a bedside, a niche, or a narrow hallway.

Dry Indoor Rooms Only

IP20, for dry indoor locations. Travertine is a porous stone that absorbs water readily and will stain and discolour. Not for bathrooms, not above a sink or hob, and not outdoors or on a covered porch.

A warm white LED at 2700–3000K brings out the honey tone of the stone; cool white makes travertine look grey and flat. An LED filament bulb gives the same visible-filament look as an Edison bulb without the heat, which matters in a shade this small.

About the Stone

Pores and Banding Are the Point

Travertine forms slowly as mineral-rich water deposits calcium carbonate, which is what gives it those open pores and layered bands. Every piece carries a different pattern, and yours will not match the photographs.

Dust with a dry soft cloth. Avoid water and any household cleaner, particularly anything acidic such as vinegar or citrus, which etches the surface of travertine permanently.
