Natural rattan is the reason to be strict about this. In damp air it absorbs moisture, swells, loses its shape, and grows mould, and a covered porch in humid or coastal weather is enough to ruin a woven shade.
Do not install it in a bathroom or shower room, directly above a sink or hob, on a covered porch or patio, or anywhere outdoors, however sheltered.
LED Bulbs Only — Dry Plant Fibre Around the Bulb
Rattan is dry natural fibre sitting close to the light source. An incandescent, halogen, or Edison filament bulb runs hot enough to scorch and discolour it over time.

Use a Frosted Bulb, Never a Clear One
An open woven dome does not hide the bulb. A clear or filament bulb puts a hard bright point inside the weave and produces glare from across the room, which flattens the very shadow pattern you bought it for.

Placement
Over a dining table, choose a shade roughly half to two thirds the width of the table and centre it on the table rather than on the room.
Hang the bottom 30 to 36″ above a surface, and keep at least 7 ft of clear headroom in any walkway. Remember the dome itself is 10.6 to 15.7″ tall, so add that to your cable drop.
Going one size bigger is the more common regret-free choice. An undersized dome over a wide table looks like an afterthought, and a woven shade carries a large size gracefully because it stays visually light.
Give it ceiling above it. The woven shadows need a surface to land on, so an open ceiling or a wall close by is part of the effect. Tucked under a low soffit, half of it is lost.
What the Light Is Like
Warm and Atmospheric Rather Than Bright
Woven natural fibre absorbs a good deal of light rather than reflecting it, so most of the useful output goes straight down through the open bottom while the dome itself glows.
Over a dining table or in an entry it is exactly right. Over a working kitchen island, pair it with under-cabinet or recessed lighting.
Use 2700–3000K warm white, which brings out the honey tone of the rattan. Cool white makes natural fibre look grey and dusty.

Care
Keep It Dry, and Brush Rather Than Wipe
Dust with a soft brush, a feather duster, or a low-suction vacuum brush, which reaches into the weave where a cloth cannot. Avoid water, steam, and damp cleaning products — rattan should be kept dry.
Dust settles on the upper curve of the dome where nobody looks, and it greys pale fibre from above. Include the top surface a few times a year.
Over a kitchen counter, airborne cooking grease works into the weave and is very hard to remove. Dust it regularly rather than trying to clean it later.
Handle it by the metal fittings rather than the weave, and expect hand-woven rattan to vary in tone and pattern from piece to piece, and to mellow slightly with time and light. That is the material, not a fault.
