Before You Order

This Takes a GX53 Bulb — Worth Knowing First

GX53 is not a screw-in bulb. It is a flat disc about the size of a drinks coaster with two pins on the back, and it twists into place rather than screwing in.

It is the reason the fixture can be this shallow and this neat, but it is a specialist bulb that supermarkets and hardware shops do not usually stock. Buy it online, and buy a spare at the same time.

GX53 is sold almost exclusively as LED, which is what you want here anyway. Contact us to confirm the maximum wattage before ordering.

Dry Indoor Rooms Only

IP20, for dry indoor locations. Travertine is a porous natural stone that absorbs moisture and stains, and the oak frame moves and cracks with humidity.

Do not install it in a bathroom, directly above a sink or hob, on a covered porch, or anywhere outdoors.

This is a compact pendant. One suits a bedside, a reading corner, a hallway, or the end of a counter.

Over a kitchen island or a dining table, hang three or more spaced 24 to 30″ apart. A single 3.9″ pendant over an island lights a narrow strip and leaves the rest of the surface dark.

Hang the bottom 30 to 36″ above a surface, and keep at least 7 ft of clear headroom in any walkway.

Hang it where people pass close by. The carved stone, the oak, and the braided cord are what you are paying for, and from across a room it reads as a small beige shape. Over a counter or beside a chair, the detail does the work.

If you buy several, expect the stone to differ between them. That is the material, not a fault, and a row of visibly different stones usually looks better than a matched set.

Warm white at 2700–3000K is the right choice. It brings out the honey tones in the travertine and suits the oak; cool white turns warm stone grey and flat and throws away the reason for choosing stone at all.

If you hang several, buy the bulbs all at once and identical. Through translucent stone, a mismatched colour temperature is very obvious.

Keep a spare in the cupboard. GX53 is easy to buy online and annoying to find in a hurry.

Care

Never Use Vinegar or Citrus on Travertine

Travertine is a calcium-based stone and acid etches it permanently. Vinegar, lemon juice, and most multi-surface and bathroom sprays leave dull marks that cannot be polished out.

Dust with a dry soft cloth only. The stone is porous, so water sitting on it leaves dark marks and oily fingerprints soak in — handle the fixture by the oak frame rather than the stone.

The oak takes a dry cloth as well. No polish, no solvents. It will mellow and darken slightly over the years, which is normal.

Stone is hard but brittle, and a hand-carved shade is thinner in places than it looks. Take care unpacking and installing it, since a knock against a worktop edge chips it permanently.
